Natural Fixes for Insomnia

Insomnia is a very common issue in the modern world. In the US alone, more than 3 million cases are reported per a year. It can't be cured from a western medicine perspective. Most cases of insomnia are related to poor sleep habits, depression, anxiety, lack of exercise, chronic illness, or certain medications. Symptoms can range from difficulty falling or staying asleep and not feeling well-rested.

From a Chinese Medicine perspective, sleep is primarily regulated through three organs. They are the heart, liver and lung. As long as all three organs are balanced, sleep can be easily regulated. There are solutions through herbal formulas such as Suan Zao Ren Tang and Huang Lian E Jiao Tang. It can also be achieved through calming points with acupuncture. But more often than not, some simple food therapy is all that is needed. The following 3 solutions are suggested.

1. Fresh Aloe Vera Juice- Drink a half cup prior to sleep (This is from the perspective of nourishing yin, especially useful if your secondary symptom associated with insomnia is heat sensation)

2. Suan Zao Ren Congee (Sour Jujube Seeds)- Mix 30g of Sour Jujube Seeds, 10g of Wu Wei Zi (schisandra fruit), and make congee. This particular congee is useful if the secondary symptom associated with insomnia is a restless mind. Have it once a day, hour prior to sleep. (Congee is made with rice and double/triple the amount of water. For example 2 cups of rice will be made into congee with at least 4-5 cups of water. Boil, and simmer until the rice is no longer grainy and the water is absorbed)

3. Bai He Congee (Lily bulb)- Mix 30g of lily bulb, 80 grams of Glutinous rice. Chop the lily bulb up, mix the ingredients and make congee. Add a bit of crystal sugar in the end for flavor. Take twice a day warm, morning and night. This particular recipe is good for dryness. It is especially useful if stress and irritability are secondary symptoms associated with the insomnia.
